Your guide to mattress sizes

Your guide to mattress sizes

You're probably familiar with the basics of mattress sizes - you know that twins are the smallest and king sizes offer the most space. However, when it comes to buying a mattress for a new bed, or trying to determine what size would fit in your new bedroom, it's important to know specific measurements and what type of sleeping situation each product is made for.

Use this mattress size guide to assist you in finding the perfect mattress for your space. Once you know what size you want, you can start thinking about whether a memory foam, hybrid or innerspring product would work best for you.

1. Twin - 39" X 75"

Twin mattresses are commonly used in toddlers' bedrooms, as they usually only offer about 39 inches of sleeping space. However, many people also use them as daybeds or trundles.

2. Twin XL - 39" X 80"

The only difference between twin and twin XL mattresses is that twin XL's have about 5 extra inches of length. These are often found in college dorm rooms, providing just enough sleeping space for one person.

3. Full - 54" X 75"

If your teenager is looking for a new a mattress, a full-sized product may work. They're more spacious than twin mattress sizes but don't offer as much width as queen products.

4. Queen - 60" X 80"

Queen mattresses are the most popular, as they fit perfectly into a variety of rooms, from single bedrooms, to guest rooms and smaller master suites.

5. King - 76" X 80"

King mattresses have ample sleeping room for one person, but they're often used by couples who share a bed. They provide the same space that you would get from pushing two twin mattresses together.

6. California king - 72" X 84"

The distinguishing factor between California king and standard king mattresses is similar to the difference between twin and twin XL. There's about 4 inches of extra length for people with California king products. However, they're also about 4 inches narrower than regular king mattresses.
